It's a very bad idea to leave God aside. To answer your question, by our civilization, the border between twenty-four hour periods is midnight. That is the middle of night, so night surrounds day. Each 24 hour period begins with night and ends with night. Day is in the middle.

Why leave God aside? Seems kind of silly to try to figure out what God did, when God already told us what he did when he created the night and the day. Night was first, then day. Anything else is mere speculation. God was an eyewitness, and he wrote it down for us.
