Those where much more innocent times. Large families that had children to help on the farms and such. But on the other hand, bad things happened then too. Your grand father was a great man I'm sure if they were married 65 years. My grand mother was married at 16 and she is a God fearing woman and my hero. Times have changed and for a reason. Back then, children had to grow up sooner and the average life span was only about 50.

Not trying to be mean, but that long ago it was normal for a woman to be married as young as 12. My grandmother was married at 12 and he was much older. back in those days it was a way of making it. He wasnt a perv, he was just doing what they did back then!

Plus for them to be married for 65 years!!!! WOW! that must have been meant to be. I would be proud of that considering most marriages today dont last a year or two.

I would congratulate them!!

When your grandmother and grandfather got married, it was acceptable for girls of that age to get married to older men. No, it does not make him a perv. Congrats on their marriage lasting 65 years....that's great!!

Up until the last 60 or 70 years, early marriage was accepted practice and even encouraged. The reason was simple. Getting married around the time of puberty reduced the chances of pre-marital sex considerably. Several generations ago, females entered puberty around 15 or 16 and were promptly married. Nowadays. girls reach puberty around 11 or 12 and don't get married until they are well into their 20's. Is it any wonder that very few women enter marriage a virgin.

It depends how old he was when he married her. In other countries, its normal to see grown men going out with high school age girls. Its a bit strange, but thats whats accepted. In this country, if he was over 18, then yes, he would be classed as a perve. But things may have been different back then.

They had to get married to have sex

It is actually the same with today teenager
They loss virginity at 14, without violate any cultural tradition

Back then, when population is so small in a town, people will know that you have done it and they will curse you if you had sex before getting married

Second reason is couple was not dating , they were too shy, the only way to know the other sex is by family/friend introduction and instant marriage

It depends on the culture they came from and what part of the world. I was looking at family records, hundreds of years old, and all the wives from that line were in their twenties, and didn't have kids until their late twenties/early thirties. Just like today!! But that was in Scotland.
The early marriages of the old days were usually Eastern European/Meditterainian ones where they were arranged, or used to keep the faith/culture in the group as there was more chance for free will/intermarriage as people got older or more independent.
What was your grandparents' background?

Did you ever read Romeo and Juliet? wasn't she betrothed when she was like, 12? Times' they are a changin' !! Now adays the legal age is 16, or 18, depending on where you live, but, back in ye olden days, they married them off much more quickly. Either there was a dowry involved, or they wanted them out of the house because they couldn't afford them!
