Have him make an appt with his regular doctor (or see a gastric specialist). The doc in the ER might have been a gyno or a pediatric doc or who knows what...and they are usually rushing to get to the next patient who is also quite ill. His own doc will hopefully take the time to figure out what's causing the reflux and try to cure the cause, not just the symptoms.

ER docs do **** like that, they don't seem to care unless it's a heart attack or worse, because that's more what the ER is for, emergencies. So instead of the ER take your man to a family doc. That way, the dude should get what he needs. If that doesn't work then all I can say is keep some good antacids around at all times.

Best of luck girl.

ERs don't generally treat a person for the long term. They usually tell you to follow up with your doctor. That is, in any event, what he should do today. Call the doctor and tell the person who answers the phone that you had to go to the ER last night. Especially if this has happened more than once. You are absolutley right, it could be serious. If the ER did not tell you to follow up then they were not on the ball.

Get him to a doctor right away. After suffering from acid reflux myself for way too long, I went and was diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus. I was put on Nexium at first, then Prevacid. Turns out I had a hiatal hernia, which was surgically repaired. However, I had to undergo EGD scopes annually to make sure the condition hasn't worsened. The doctor told me 1 in 10 eventually develop esophageal cancer if left untreated.

my family doctors says take Gaviscon and pepcid extra strength twice aday for no less then 8 weeks. If still around go to internist Dr. for RX.hint Gaviscon can be taken whenever needed in between pecid dose. Also stop eating tomatoes, spicy food, and sleep with your head above your shoulders. you can also put blocks under your head of the bed for elevation. remember this is not a diagnosis just paying it forward. not responsible for any and all reactions if advice is taken.

After dinner, but before he starts feeling too bad, mix up some soy protein powder in water. If there is a scoop in the container (most have one), I would say 1/3 scoop, in a BIIIIGGG glass, as soy does not taste great. Have him drink it slowly.

The water and the soy protein should help settle his stomach, and calm the acid.

have him stop eating a few hours before going to sleep. Eat smaller meals more often instead of eating bigger meals till full. And get to the doctor. Trust me it use to happen to me.
