I am a straight female who has gay friends. Not exclusivly but I do have more gay then straight guy friends. I do not understand the meaning of "f*a* g-Hag". I tend to feel insulted when I hear women referred to as this. Am I wrong to feel this way? I have heard it said that if a black person calls another black person the n-word that it is okay, but if a white person does it then that person is racist. Is this the same for the word f*a*g-hag? It just sounds so negative. I just have the sneaky suspicion that if a gay calls me this then I am being insulted. If it is not asking to much, could you please limit you answer to my question. The one thing that I have found on this forum is most answers do not have anything to do with the question asked so once againg my question is this...... is being referred to as a f*a*g-hag a compliment or an insult? See, I just previewed my question and the filtered the F*A*G part. they even think that it is an insult!

My sister's an aesthetician. She does nails in a nice salon. From happy hour hang outs, and other social occasions, I've heard the "f-hag" term used both ways by male and female stylists. I think it really depends on the context. But face it, some super queen can be extremely catty with an innocent grin on his face. The best advice, dish it right back with a sweet innocent smile on your face...

I don;t think it's really all that insulting to YOU...for a straight person to say that around gay men would be insulting to them. I always took it when someone called a woman a f-hag that they just meant she loved to hang out with gay guys, particularly more feminine gay men. Which really isn't all that odd. I know plenty of women who like hanging out with gay men. My take, don;t be offended to be called a f-hag, if anything, be offended they are calling your friends f*gs.

A f*a*g* hag is a hetero person who spends time around gay people. The word "f*a*g*" is ok to be used only between other gay people, but it's an insult if hetero people use it.

It's one of those phrases that can go either way.

At best, it means a woman (usually straight) who seeks out gay men to hang with, for whatever reason. At worst, it's derogatory.

BUT-- if you don't like being called that, then it's an insult to you. Call down anyone who calls you that and let them know you don't like it. I know some women who will introduce themselves with it, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable for everyone.

It depends on whether you choose to hang out with gay guys because you are scared to hang out with straight guys and put yourself in a vulnerable emotional situation.

Some gals hang out exclusively (or almost) with gay guys b/c they get male company without the risk of emotional trauma. The guys are also more likely to be supportive and in touch with their emotions.

Gay groups can be fun to hang around, but if you're straight you won't feel "complete" by this. Just have fun, but consider whether you're going to meet a nice straight guy (or if you even want to ;) ) in such an environment.

As to whether it's an insulting term - who gives a **** what people think??!

Your only being insulted if you take that way, i take as a compliment and that just screws with their head. Honestly it's used as an insult but most people take it as a compliment.

It's a woman who chases gay men trying to get them to go straight.
You can take the term however you wish.
Coming from your gay friends it's probably done in jest. But from others it's more likely derogatory.

I think it's derogatory. I picture an overweight old maid that can't get any from heterosexual men so she hangs out with the gays. Sorry.

For me it is both a compliment and an insult. Depending on how it is delivered to me...
