computer is mainly characterised for its very high speed of doing numerous operations including numerical ones.it is highly reliable device.it almost never commit mistakes unless wrong information is fed in.being a machine it is not tired of doing repeated calculations for a no.of times.also the storage capacity matters.

Though ur question is multi-dimentioned even i would like to say that major characteristic of computer is that it is "General Purpose" machine........can be used in almost every walk of life.
