My favourite myth or creature is the phoenix
Said to live for 500 or 1461 years (depending on the source), the phoenix is a male bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in Heliopolis ("the city of the sun" in Greek), located in Egypt. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible — a symbol of fire and divinity.

The banshee... Just as to the fact that she was placed there to cry when death was protent. N that she appears as either one of three froms, a young woman, a stately matron or a raddled old hag. These represent the triple aspects of the Celtic goddess of war and death, namely Badhbh, Macha and Mor-Rioghain. The banshee may also appear in a variety of other forms, such as that of a hooded crow, stoat, hare and weasel - animals associated in Ireland with witchcraft. Now isnt that just cool.

Vampires.... Solitary figures, strong and loyal. Trusting their immortality upon a chosen few. Regal and proud. Worldly and knowledgable. Great fashion sense and a profound tolerance for stupidity. Ahhh...romantic and seductive. Powerful and everything that is wonderful and good in the world.

being a Greek myself, i would opt for Hercules (Herakles the better spelling) - mostly amidst other things because he had the courage to sustain all controversies and get on top of HIS world by banishing all his phantasms and evil thoughts as pictured in each and every great deed of his. This myth reveals foremost the ability of a human being to reach his/her divine quality by simple refusing to surrender, fight to get better and always believe in the impossible.
(That's why we all need a myth... to attain our personal impossible...)
