learning a language especailly one that is very extremely hard to pronouce and to read is not a good idea to learn on yourself as you might be learning very incorrectly and have no one to correct you.

The cheapest way to learn a starter base for Japanese is use text and cd's to get the basic greetings down for conversational Japanese. Try to find a Japanese course in your area if possible.
If you really are serious about learning Japanese. Try to do a homestay program in Japan.

Buy some learning japanese books, that what I did, however you really need one with a cd for the pronunciations....
