Did he honestly think France would want to be part of England or did he want to take advantage of France's defeat?

He was concerned that us, Europe, would go to war with eachother again. He was all for a Federal European Union, he even stated a United States of Europe. It wasnt an act of union purely with England, it was Europeanwide, he planned for a 'special relationship'; with France, similar to what we have with the Dominion - colonies (Australia, Canada etc)..Baisaccly, it was an early EU. General De Gaul was against working with England, he was a twonk of a leader.

1) (My opionion) He was being I R O N I C A L.

2) (Truth) During the WWII France & Britain were the most powerfull nation in Europe. So as to DEFEAT Hitler and as England is an island, and France was a neigbhouring to Germany. When France surrendered to Germany, they needed the support of France's army and land to surround Germany.
