By birth there is no colour difference.but as they grow up they expose to the sunlight and when the body lacks Vit A the body in order to protect itself from the harmful UVA and UVB rays produce more melanin in the body and as a result the skin darkens at knees and elbows.

tough on you or perhaps your observation. some of us are single tonned all over the body. Any ways your observation is practical on some people. I've seen people with knees, elbows and rear thighs being darker than the rest of the body. Well dark knees could be a hardened skin (top part of skin) that result from kneeling frequently. people kneel for different reason eg, cleaning (indoors and outdoors), praying and doing other work that requires that. For elbows the same explanation can be given. For rear thighs I do not have a direct explanation but a friend informed me that it is a result of peeing too much during infancy.

imagine your skin is like a coloured inflated balloon, like green. the regions where the balloon has been stretched the most (ie. the middle) are the lightest where as the top and bottom appear to be darker because the ballon is sort of more gathered here.
This principle applies to skin,..areas with more or gathered skin such as the ankles, knee caps and elbows will be darker because there is more skin here- the skin isnt stretched. there is more skin here to allow for joint mobility.

it's due to uneven distribution of melanin in diff parts of the body.it is contolled by melanocyte stimulating harmone(MSH).this MSH is secreted by pars intermedia of the brain.hence it's also called 'intermedin'.
