Giving in to impulsivity. Selfishness is the root of evil...the "if it feels good, do it" mentality, with complete disregard (apathy) for others. That's what would be defined as "evil".
If someone acts without thinking of others, then harm to others is inevitable. think of the most evil people you have heard of. Mass murderers, Stalin, Hitler, they all has their personal agendas, and a complete disregard for human life. They may have even taken pleasure in the distruction of life...the feeling of "power" that it gave them, the joy they felt, all selfish acts. Their personal joy was more important to them than the lives of others.
We all have the impulsive nature within us, and, as normal people, we try to control it (that's the whole "free will argument") but some people just don't care to.

Like Woody Harrelson's Character Mickey Knox from the film Natural Born Killers said "Oh, we know the difference between right and wrong, we just don't give a damn"

Nothing forces people to act in any way. It is always a decision of the will. People have been acting in evil ways ever since the Fall, when humanity originally went off the rails by choosing to disobey God.

Remember that unfortunately "bad" or "evil" is an opinion, not a fact. Different people, and even different societies have different skews on what is bad or evil.

But saying that I would think the majority of people consider murder, rape and robbery to be very bad things!

There are so many different factors here! Genetics, family, upbringing, your peer group, your society, your fortunes, your experiences, wars...it goes on and on.

No one is forced to be bad.
It's perception really.
The ones you consider bad may think that they are good and you are bad. They may have done whatever 'bad things' because they felt they were doing good.
Perhaps they don't have the synapsis functions firing properly or they lack chemical means to drive their bodies normally.
It's all relative.

Its an interesting question. If you are asked to do something and you do it - its by your own free will. If the thing you are asked to do is not agreeable to your values in life, you may not want to do it. What I understand is your question is: when this is the fact, why do people act in spite their values?

I am sure this is happening all the time - especially during war-acts. Why do common people vitness or do rape, kill and torture when they are ordered to without acting against it. Even though people have different morals depending on what they are brought up to value, they must justify their act with ethics.

So; Is it fear of being punished or killed? In what degree will your ethics lead you to not act in spite of the threat of being killed.

This would depend on who desides that a person is bad or evil. It is important to remember that one mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist - look at Nelson Mandela - was he a terrorist or a hero of his country???

i don't think there is such a thing as being forced as there is just people growing up in the wrong surrondings or just in a broken home enviroment with out the proper love and attention.
