You can get cramps along with your period, which don't exactly hurt, but are uncomfortable. I didn't start getting those till my mid-20's though.

Because of prostaglandin production, most women experience some cramping, ranging from mild to more painful (often alleviated by over the counter or prescribed pain medication). However, "killer cramps" are NOT normal and absolutely should not be ignored. Cramps that are debilitating and interupt your life may be a sign of Endometriosis, a painful reproductive and immunological disorder that affects reproductive-aged women and girls from all walks of life. While there is no cure for Endo, there are treatments that can be tried ranging from oral contraceptives to surgery (which is required to diagnose the disease anyway). See www.endocenter.org if you feel like your periods are out of the realm of "normal." Good luck to you.

Some women experience cramping in the pelvic region as the cervix opens up. Motrin, heating pads, hot water bottles, stretching, and rest help some women. A few women have enough discomfort that they miss work or school when they get their periods. A gynecologist can be consulted if pain is severe.

yes, your body is going thru some changes.....ok alot of changes. Some girls have cramps very low in their stomach when they have a period. Holding a hot water bottle against your stomach may make you feel better.

Exercise often helps period pain. You may bleed more heavily when you exercise so it's a good idea to change your towel before you start the lesson. If you wear a tampon you can go swimming as the blood is held inside you. It can take some time to get used to having periods and feeling confident about dealing with them. But periods are a sign that your body is working, and they are a normal, healthy, special part of being female.
