I pureed some pears last night and gave her some right away but saved some in the refrigerator for tonight. They quickly turned brown and now they are the color of brown sugar. Are they still good? Can I still give them to her tonight?

I am a nutritionist

the fruit is just oxidised it is not spoiled

it is safe to eat (providing the "baby" is at least 6 months of age because before this time she should have no solids)

I'm glad to see a parent preparing there own food for the baby insted of feeding the processed junk form the store shelves :)

There is nothing wrong with the pears turning brown they are still good. Just make sure that when you feed your baby part of what you made, you don't put back the whole thing. The saliva from your baby will make bacteria grown in the rest of the food. Throw it away if she ate out of that batch of pears. Pears will turn brown very quickly, so next time you make a batch, make a lot and freeze then in ice cube trays. They are perfect 2 ounce servings. Don't add lemon juice or anything else to it to make it keep longer. It's not good for your baby. Citrus is very baby for a baby under a year. Good Luck!

Fruit turns brown in the refrigerator due to oxidation. But the problem is, since its brown now you really cant tell whether it is starting to spoil or not. Its *probably* just oxidation, which normally wouldn't mean anything and is perfectly fine to eat. There really is no reason to suspect spoilage has occurred if its only been in the fridge less than 24 hours. But since you can't tell, then it may be best just to throw it out this time. You can also try (next time) adding a little lemon or lime juice to the puree. This will prevent (or at least delay) browning due to oxidation.

I wouldn't eat browned fruit so don't feed them to your baby. I probably wouldn't put some lemon juice on them either since infants have a very sensitive stomach to any citrus fruits because they contain acid. See if freezing the fruit will help the browning and if it doesn't simply use fruits freshly or fruits that do not brown. I think that is great how you make your own baby food because it is so much healthier for your baby. Power to you!

No, I would give those to her....they may give her an upset stomach.

Try a product call All Fruit...it keep fruit fresh and help prevent it from turning brown...Lemon juice will work as well but it changes the taste!

No, fruit turns brown because of oxidation, so most vitamins are not there anymore. Plus, the color shows bacterial decomposition has started. You should always give her fresh fruit, which keeps all of the vitamins.

I personally think they loose their flavor substantially by the time they turn brown, I wouldn't eat a brown pear. I'm sure they are fine in terms of safety, but taste wise, yuck.

They are probably still good, but I would not feed them to her. Next time, add some lemon juice to keep the color from changing.

As long as they haven't actually gone bad, you *could* give her some, but I wouldn't. Fresh food is tastier and more nutritious than old food. Browning is a sign that both taste and nutrition are leaving...
