Since I have never tried the lottery, I will do my best to answer this based on some math (which may be rusty, so forgive me).
Let's say you have 2 seperate single digit numbers you had to pick. Considering the fact that there are 10 different single digit numbers (0-9), even just choosing 2 single digit numbers would be 55 combinations (if you use 0, 2 and 2, 0 as the same combination.)
Now, if the lottery consists of more than single digit numbers (such as 0-50) then it raises the amount of combinations greatly, as well as the fact that you would have to choose more than 2 numbers.
So basically, even if the lottery consisted of 2 single digit numbers, you would only have 1 in 55 chances of winning. If it consists of more numbers and greater than single digit numbers... well, you're just outta luck.

As a friend of mine in college used to say, "The lottery is a tax on people who can't do math."
It may be an urban legend, but I've been told that the odds of winning prizes in a typical lottery (small or large prizes) are constructed to be roughly the same as the odds that a rat will win a reward when performing a maze correctly. (Many behavioral experiments don't reward the rat every time, because then it would get bored and stop playing.)
Welcome to the rat race. ;-)

Lottery is for the organizer..... He wins every penny from whosoever buys the lottery tickets.
Giving away fraction of it to persons at random (or by choice) is his choice...
You just have to be part of Lottery Organizer... Happy Winnings!

You can win, but obviously are just not buying enough tickets. If you purchase one ticket for each combination of numbers, then I guarantee that you will win! (You may lose a fortune doing this, but you will certainly win the lottery.)

You need to take the red pill...
That and the odds of winning are generally low. For instance, in Texas the odds are 1 in 15,890,700 chances you will win the big prize. For more on the odds, see http://www.thelotterysite.com/lottery_odds.htm
Lastly, you have to actually play to win and fulfill eligibility requirements.

Mathematically the only right answer is:
because you never bought a ticket.
If you bought one nevertheless, the probability to win is extemely small but not zero. So you could win !!

Poor odds.
You are more likely to be simultaneously be bitten by a dog and struck by lightening while buying your ticket than actually winning.

if you had studied mathematics, you can easily see that there are a lot of probabilities in lottery, meaning a lot of combinations. and its just pure luck if you win it!
