Windows Vista is the name of a major version of Microsoft Windows, the proprietary graphical operating system used on personal computers, including home and business desktops, notebook computers, and media centers. Prior to the announcement of the Vista name on July 22, 2005, it was known by its codename Longhorn.
According to Microsoft, Windows Vista has hundreds of new features, such as an updated graphical user interface and visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker, and completely redesigned networking, audio, print and display sub-systems. Microsoft claims that Vista also aims to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network using peer-to-peer technology, making it easier to share files, password settings, and digital media between computers and devices.

Windows Vista is the final name for the next major Windows OS, code-named Longhorn, which is the successor to Windows XP. (The server version of Longhorn likely won't carry the Vista title and will instead be named Windows Server 2007.) Microsoft released Vista Beta 1 on July 27. If you're purchasing new machines now on which you want to be able to run Vista, ensure that they have a minimum of 512MB of RAM and at least a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor.

Vista is what they are now calling Longhorn
Longhorn is what they started working on after XP and 2003 server.
It will be the new OS to make all our hardware inadequate and slow, just like every other generation of Windows (remember running indows 3.11 and UPGRADING to 4MB to enable 386 enhanced mode? We've come a long way baby!)
Basically, it's just the next generation of windows.
