Because when it is Winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be Summer in the South. To avoid the lack of food and protection in winter conditions, birds fly South and return when the weather is better.

Anyone heard of the reverse of birds flying North in winter for the Southern Hemisphere?

The southern countries like Australia have their summers while the northern countries are going through winter, therefore it would only be logical to go to the warmest place you can find during winter.
