Best choice to fit Lucas' desire? Yes. Lucas had said he wanted to choose a fairly new and unknown actor for the role (of both young and older Anakin) so Hayden at the time was a good mix of young and relatively unknown actor. I think people put too much hate into a character when in fact it's the writing and script that the actors are acting out.

Jake Lloyd, who whatever the first kids name was, played Anakin whiny because the script either called for it, or Lucas directed the character as such. I don't think that if Lucas did not want that affect and Jake acted it out like that, that Lucas would accept the acting.

Another consideration to take into all of this is the fact of height and age. There were not that many actors around 6'2" tall and young at the time of casting for EP II.

I personally thought they should have used Will Smith to play Anakin. That way when he gets burnt to a crisp in Ep III but then in Ep VI we see an old white dude, that would explain what's happened to Michael Jackson.

George Lucas , in my mind, should of started with Anakin at Luke's age (around 18) when episode one begins. Hayden Christensen is cool as Anakin/Darth in Episode three but is a bit of a mamma's boy in episode two. Hayden himself said he was more into the role by ep3 so shouldnt he have started off as mark hamill did and grow with the role? so yes i think he was the right choice but George should of got him for ep1 instead of Jake Lloyd.

I think the lack of acting ability can be ascribed more to Lucas' style of scriptwriting and directing moreso than any lack of talent on the part of the actors. Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson, and Christopher Lee are amazing actors, but you wouldn't be able to tell that from just watching the Star Wars prequels. I've seen Christiansen in other movies and, despite all appearances in Star Wars, he *can* act his way out of a wet paper bag. If the only directions you got from your director were "Faster! More intense!" and you had to deliver lines like "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth" like it was Shakespeare, you'd seem like a sucky actor too.

No, I don't think so. I think that the only reason he was chosen for the part was b/c he SOMEWHAT resembled little Anakin in the Phantom Menace.

Sweet muscular Jesus no!!! He comes off as a whiny, petulant little creep who should be given detention, rather than the tragic, mythical hero he's supposed to be.
Mind you, the scripts were appalling. The only actors in it who still looked cool were Samuel L. Jackson and the guy playing Palpatine.

Without a doubt. The dialogue was wooden and his hottness is what prevented many from falling asleep. No one else could have done it like him. I mean, LEORNADO Di CAPRIO as a young Darth Vader? I think not.

I didn't particularly like the brooding character he potrayed but guess we have to leave it to George Lucas to decide since the story and movie were truly his baby and vision.

He was good in the 3rd one, but he reminds me of my ex so sitting thru episode 3 with my new boyfriend was kinda weird!
