Sea-faring surely?
Yes, South China Sea, Sargasso Sea, around Indonesia, thereabouts. They're not nice people despite not having jolly rogers or cutlasses.

Oh my, they are the reason that cruise ships have had to up their security.
many lines, like carnival and Norweiigan lines have electric fence areas on the outside of the ships, the crew is versed in weaponary that you as a passenger would not ever see unless you had to.
Pirates now use jet skis and larger water craft to accomplish the mission. The ships large size is a deterant as well as a benefit, but they can travel much faster than the speed that passengers are accustomed to.
Type "pirates, cruise ships" into your toolbar for news and info and see what pops up. I know that about 2 1/2 motnhs ago there was 3 episodes that made national headlines.

Piracy is robbery committed at sea, or sometimes the shore, by an agent without a commission from a sovereign nation. One who commits piracy by engaging in robbery, pillaging, or plundering at sea is known as a pirate. Seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue (with estimated worldwide losses of $13 to $16 billion USD per year), particularly in the waters between the Pacific and Indian oceans, and specifically in the straits of Malacca and Singapore, which are used by over 50,000 commercial ships a year. While boats off the coasts of South America and the Mediterranean Sea are still assailed by pirates, the advent of the United States Coast Guard has nearly eradicated piracy in American waters and the Caribbean Sea.

oooh! I want to be a pirate!!
I think there are though. Not the kind ya think about, like Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean on large sailing ships and parrots and peg legs...but more like guys with automatic weapons that drive larger boats and steal sail boats from tourists...probably still in the Caribbean though. I'd have a hard time stealing someones boat and killing them if I were a pirate. I probably wouldn't make a great one. I would like to sail around in the Caribbean and drink rum and have a monkey or a parrot on board my boat! :) That would be cool. Maybe I could just run boats down and take their beer or liquor! LOL!

Currently the worst place for pirates seems to be of the coast of Africa, where a number of aid shipments have been pirated.Thailand has its share of pirates too and so do the waters around Indonesia. There are plenty of pirates around in this world today. Mostly they prey on refugees trying to escape from political hotspots, but they also raid wealthy yachties and commercial shipping.

Somalia is a leading pirate breeding ground.
Whenever you have a Bill Gates with 40B $ or a gigolo Tom Cruise earning 1,2m$ per day as opposed to an African hard laborer earning 1 $ per month; you will have pirates. The world is not fair !

Yes, there are. While they don't have a hook for a hand and necessarily were an eye patch and make victims walk the plank, there are modern day pirates. Also known as "bandits of the high seas," they board ships with the purpose of theft or other crime, sometimes using force.

There are modern day pirates. they do not have wooden legs, patches or hooks and parrots. Nor do they go arrr me hearties either. They are vicious people with high speed boats, weapons, bombs and lots of technology at there disposal. They look for rich boats, cargo ships and cruise ships and that and try to boared them and steal the cargo or the money of passengers or whateve they can get. They probably hurt people or take hostages untill they get what they want. Then they can get away really quick in their jet boats or whatever and go to the place they hide out.

Yes there are, off the coast of Somalia and Ethiopia, only these pirates use speedboats and fire rocket propelled grenades at ships they are trying to hijack! Search on that and you will find some recent news articles (within the last year or two.)
