Semiconductors have different uses:
1. an N-P junction diode can be used as a rectifier, ie, to convert AC to DC [partly or fully] using the tranmission capabilities of transmission in forward & reverse biased situations
2. an N-P-N or P-N-P triode can be used for rectification with amplification
3. Doped semiconductors can also be used to construct logic gates in microelectronic devices.

Semiconductors are the basis of all active components in electronic circuits. Unlike things like resistors and capacitors, their electrical properties can be electrically controlled.

For instance, the computer you are sitting at uses field effect transistors to make the logic gates. These have two contacts with a channel between them; a third contact - the gate - controls whether the channel conducts or not.

Every electronic item you own - from the most humble to the most complex - is based on semiconductors.
