I know from my Dad and virtually anyone from the 1980s and before that we could look at the future and see all sorts of new inventions and discoveries and you know as well - living on other planets that can sustain our life forms. However, today on the news and all you hear all this about fuel shortage and running out and also other various mass problems conflicting with human future, would anyone share any ideas about the near future or just the next century - all answers welcome.

To sum it up in one word...change.

The planet and its weather, geography and its species have changed and evolved since the beginning of time and will continue to do so according to whatever plan God has in store for us.

Wars and fighting have been around since the beginning of man and they will continue - the war game will remain the same, only the players and methods of playing will change over time.

From numerous books and magazines I have read, the world continues to become more "flat" due to global technological advances - life in what is now in 3rd world contries will continue to improve due to the importing of jobs and decrease in 1st world contries due to jobs being exported to the 3rd world countries.

The greenhouse effect will continue and the earth will become warmer and the weather more erratic; there will be more hurricanes and flash floods in some areas due to torrential rain storms pouring down several inches in an hour. In other areas, there will be drought.

Fossil fuels will continue to be depleted and the world will be forced to into adapt to using alternate methods for energy and transportation, such as solar and nuclear power and hybrid cars.

Sadly, many species will become extinct due to their habitats being demolished.

The avian flu will virus will mutate and infect humans and could cause a pandemic if CDC and others working on the cure cannot find a way to fight it once it occurs.

Technological and medical advances will continue at expotential rates and things we cannot even imagine today will be common place in 20 years (excellent examples of items that were introduced in the late 70's early '80's that today are common place are computers, the internet, CD's, video game systems, VCRs and DVDs...dang, I wish we had them when I was a kid!).

I think it's unlikely humans will be wiped out all together. We are after all VERY clever monkeys. What's left of us (worst case) may well eventually be living a very un-exciting life living in semi-underground bunkers eating protein sticks made from algae while we wait for the climate to go back to something habitable.

Look on the bright side, the US may premtively stike North Korea, (or China, or Iran) and then the radiaion fallout will kill everything far before then.

Gary what you missed in those talks with dad about all the cool new inventions and the exploration and colonization of distant planets was the impetuous to leave this one.
This has long been a Tenet of mainstream Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction, the two genres most likely to have addressed your topic, that as the conditions on our Home planet become/became untenable through shortages. war, overpopulation, religious frenzy etc that Mankind would feel the need to escape... explore, kind of as a pressure relief on society.
when a civilization ceases expanding and challenging itself it begins to stagnate....
what you see around you is the stagnation....

I believe that within the next couple of decades there will be people on the moon and Mars.
And if Congress gets some letters and more people voted most of the Congress out and got new people with new ideas, we might be able to harvest wind power and solar power to power many homes, thus eliminating harmful byproducts of coal and gas and nuclear power.

If Stephen Hawkings does much more thinking, he might actually figure out how we might travel through those worm holes.

The future is going to be great!

To be very honest the human race is heading for self destruction and we are not advanced enough to even experiment with the possibilities of life on other planets to preserve our race.
