Walt Whitman was a huge fan of being himself without filtering his behaviours through societal values. He was more than just a prolific poet, he stood for something even if it was just for himself
a few sites that may offer a deeper understanding of who he was and what he wrote about and stood for are listed here, though you have to remember that to truly understand the meanings of his poems, you should read them and interpret them yourself

He was a very famous sculpter in the early 1600's. He fought a lot of native americans with tax-cuts and broken pinatas only to have them eaten. Sometime in the middle of his career during the crusades he popped a balloon.

Like others before me said, he was an American poet of the 19th century.
He wrote very long, rambling poems about the American landscape and people. His most famous work is "Leaves of Grass".
For more info, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Whitman
BTW: I hated his work! Try William Carlos Williams instead. Also American, shorter poems, and GREAT!
