Don't panic, don't reformat, don't look for spy ware.
This is an obvious case of fragmentation of files causing the slow working and probably a lot of unnecessary files which need to be deleted.
The fastest and most efficient defrag tool that I have found is Diskkeeper from Executive Software and to clean up all the rubbish use CrapCleaner.

If you can save your My Documents folder to an external drive then I would recomend you format your c drive....and then re-install your OS, My Doc's folder and other applications you need. I recently did this with my laptop and it's back to being super-super fast, like when I first got it :-) I've got all the anti-spy ware and virus stuff but you can't beat a good old format of the c drive to put things back to how they should be. It may take a few hours to complete but well worth the time if you have it.

run virus protection scan
run spyware scan - free version of adaware se personal edition
run history eraser - free history eraser
delete internet cookies - open up internet explore, go to tools, internet options, click on delete cookies, delete history,
do a disk clean up
then do a disk defrag
this should speed it up good for you, if it dont you might want to think about a memory upgrade or buying a new laptop!

Since you are using internet , then probably you are not deleting the temporary internet files after use. Install a program named Crap cleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com
another reason can be installation of a spyware on your pc. for that install a good antispyware like microsoft windows defender , lavasoft ad-aware , spybot search and destroy , mcafee antispyware.
another reason can be the installation of unwanted programs or start up files or services. for that install a pc optimizer software like Iolo System mechanic.

Get a registry cleaner and a spyware detective program and run them. Also, do a disc defrag once a month or so. Delete internet history, cookies, offline stuff in temp files...that should do it.

Go To www.avast.com - download avast anti virus - trust me - do a boot-up scan - you probobly have viruses on your lappie. Rid yourself of useless firewalls & any other anti-virus programs - then download avast - it's the best - and it's free.
