protection errors are most commonly caused by 2 things (usually a virtual device driver (VXD)) trying to occupy the same, or at least an overlapping area of RAM. ie - if device 1 takes ram area 8 to 10, and device 2 tries to load starting at say area 5 and it is 4 units big, you can see it will collide with the ram of device 1.
This is a very simple analogy, but helps to visualize the most common cause of protection errors.
Many other things can cause them, and without an exact context, it's impossible to tell you where to start looking for a solution if you are having one.

This error shows if any files used by windows itself altered or changed. Usually in this case, windows will tell u to insert Windows CD in your CD drive. It'll then acquire proper file again from that CD.
