The propounder of the concept Sigmund being one of the greatest psychologists of our time must have been a victim of such and thus he came up with the concept. There is no doubt that offspring tend to be drawn to parents of the opposite sex but not to the extent Sigmund suggested though as time goes by we have started seeing sick demented persons that are only suited for psychiatric homes using his hypothetical framework to as a bases for their social life.

I do believe that children tend to be closer to the parent of the opposite gender, but I do not believe it is anything sexual, I think it's just human nature.
