Euro 96 semi-final against Germany at Wembley. I'm Scottish and even I know that. He then appeared in the Pizza-Hut advert along with Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce because they had both missed penalties, ironically also against Germany, in the World Cup semi-final at Italia '90.

The first ever World Cup game that I have seen also coincided with Ireland's first appearance at a World Cup Finals. We played against England in our opening game the Italia '90 World Cup Finals. I remember Lineker scored for England, then Kevin Sheedy scored our equaliser. In the same group, we also played out a 0-0 draw with Egypt and finished with a 1-1 draw against Holland, which was enough to send us into the last 16. That last 16 game was probably the most memorable World Cup game I have ever seen because we played against Romania and the stadium was full of Irish supporters waving their flags. We were never given a hope of getting out of the group stages but we surpassed almost everyone's expectations and legend has it that most of the Irish fans who stayed in Italy to continue supporting the team re-mortgaged their houses so they could keep the boys in green going! We drew that game and won on a penalty shootout. The celebrations in Dublin when that happened were unbelieveable and I will never forget it. We were in the middle of a bad recession at the time and yet, the success of this team gave us all something to be happy about as a small nation. We lost to Italy 1-0 in the quarter finals but the team got a brilliant welcome home when they got back to Dublin and it was estimated that maybe up to 1 million people came out to welcome the team home. Our manager at the time, Jack Charlton (an Englishman) was proclaimed a hero in Ireland and received the freedom of Dublin City in acknowledgement of his acheivements. It still gives me goosbumps to think about those good days or to see the replays when Jack Charlton was manager of the team, but they are the memories that will last forever in my mind.
