For the first time you should get something small and have it put where it won't be noticed much. They say first timers get a tattoo thay really don't like.

In response to your mother not liking it, I can't give you any advice without knowing her or the reason(s) why she is against it. That being said, it is your body and you shouldn't let somebody else decide what you do or don't do with it. In response to the actual tattoo, I like the idea of the scarab better, because it is a less common design than the others. If you get any of the other designs, I can guarantee you are going to run across other people with very similar tats. For pricing, if it is only 1 color and only 4 inches (that's what she said, LOL), I'm guessing it will take about 1-2 hrs. A decent shop will charge at least $100/hr. plus you should tip, so I think the final price will be between $300-$400. I can't stress enough the importance of doing your research. Don't worry about the price, worry about the art. Ask people who have well-done tattoos where they got them. Once you find a shop; look around, and make sure they are clean and tidy. Check out their portfolio and make sure you like the work. Only slightly related: I am not sure that you will be able to get that much detail into the scarab if it is only 3 inches across. Even if they can do it, all tattoos will fade/blur a little, so you have to figure that into the equation.

I think its a feeling that you get when you see an image, it kind of just hits you on where to place it on your body.
I also believe, like the Maori´s, that a tattoo should say something about the person who has one.
I have 3 tattoos in total (more to come) One on my shoulder of a dream catcher, I am from the west coast of Canada and proud of the Indian culture. Another of a spider on upper back, because I am fascinated by them and think that they are nature´s most creative and artistic creatures. And the 3rd is of an angel on my lower back, because I believe in angels and my nickname has been Angel for as long as I remember. I hope this helps, and good luck!!:)

Well for a first tattoo I would find something you like to look at or that is very meaningful. Get a picture of it and put it somewhere your at all the time...so you can look at it. If you don't get sick of looking at it...it is a good choice for a tattoo. As for where to put it...someplace that is flattering to your body. I would pay the price for a quality tattoo with pretty color and someone who can customize tattoos. I put mine on my lower back and it curves with my body. Putting tattoos on your hands, face or neck can have drawbacks, so think of that too. Tattoos invovle some pain so...you gotta be able to handle that too. Good luck.

browse through tattoo books until several designs catch your eye, and then think what would you do to make the tattoo yours and personal? then browse artists, and ask them. they can be very helpful.

even try finding a similar looking temporary tattoo and place it where you're thinking. or henna. that way, if you don't quite like it there, it's not permanent.

if you wish, I doodle tattoo designs for fun, and I've posted a few at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sspyndel

take a look there and if you like, save and use!please be kind, though.. and admit you found it online rather than claiming it as your own!

I always thought that if I got one it would be of a great white shark. And I'd have it on my arm, between the shoulder and elbow. Check out the included website for a wealth of information on tattoos:
