OK so once a week I borrow a friend's but that's because a lot of public phones have been taken away. How can you relax or concentrate on anything if your mobile's ringing...and the pointless, loud conversations people seem to have...I'm just coming round the corner, I'll call you again in 5 minutes. Never have so many been conned out of so much by so few.

I do have a mobile but I don't use it nearly as much as I did before I retired. Like all technology, it has its uses but one should be aware of its drawbacks. Although mine is a relatively simple model, it has some features which I have found very useful.

1) As a phone. My contract gives me 'free' minutes and it's cheaper to call a landline than it is to use the house phone in many cases. A contact point when shopping or at the mercy of public transport. In public I try to keep conversation to the minimum and not to share with half the supermarket a discussion on whether or not we need that special offer. A valuable method of verifying directions at the end of a journey. Where it is not necessary to discuss something, merely to convey information, I use text. In fact I will text rather than speak in most cases. Again, the contract has free texts per month month

2) As a calendar/reminder. My phone synchronises with my Outlook calendar. This is on the whole more convenient than a pocket diary.

3) Camera. At first I thought that a camera would be a silly luxury. In fact it has a surprisingly good camera and I use it particularly if there is text I would like to record - a poster, restaurant menu, price tickets and articles seen in shops which I need a second opinion on. It's much quicker than finding paper or notepad and writing down the information. I can download the pictures to the PC, write down the information at leisure and then delete the image.

My phone is not an essential piece of equipment, nor am I really lost without it, but I do find valid uses for it and I think I would miss it somewhat if I didn't have it now.

With regard to the chicken recipe, I made some additional comments in answer to your question. I would have sent you a message but you don't have your contact option turned on. (*Pace* Community Guidelines!)

My husband and I don't have or want a mobile phone. We did buy one last year to take on vacation with us. One of the kind that you have to buy min. for. The min. ran out. We brought more because of an er but never loaded the min.

We cannot understand why teenagers would want a moblie phone. Who wants their parents to be able to get in touch with them anywhere, anytime?

I don't want anyone to be able to reach me all the time.

But my husband and I don't have a phone in our bedroom.

I like to talk on the phone and talk to my friends once a day. It is a wonderful way to keep in touch.

It is rude to talk on the phone whether mobile or not if someone is with you. I saw a couple eat lunch and the girl talked on the phone the whole time she ate ignoring the man.

Yes I know all about er's. But I live in the outskirts of a city, not in the middle or a dessert.

And if anyone dies, leave me a message. I am too far away to be there stat and I could use the relief from grief until I get home.

So that is my opinion. I am not saying cell phones aren't necessary or fun. I am just saying that maybe they are an unneeded expense, and rude.

I have a cell phone and have learned to turn it off in order to get any privacy. People call me at all hours of the day or night just because they can. If I don't answer right away, it goes to voice mail. For some reason they think that if they leave me a message( mostly very unimportant) I am obligated to call them back. I have a love/hate thing going on here.

I never wanted a mobile phone, but was given one as a gift for Christmas. Since then it's been lying in a desk drawer unused. For emergency calls en route, mobile phones are invaluable. Otherwise, there's nothing about them that I like. In fact, I really don't like phoning at all. Guess I'm a Luddite.

I'm deaf but they have this special pager that have keyboard on it. My parents and friends have been trying hard to get me buy one. However I refuse to. I notice that those with a such thing tend to use it to change plan at last min, allow them to show up for things late, etc...

Since I'm only one who basically no body can get a hold of, they know that they can't cancel any plan or change anything at last min when it come to me. It is a good thing for me :-)

Cell phone is one of the most controversial invention in the recent time. For some,it is the most valuable invention, for others,it is most disturbing and over-used gadget. However,it has more merits than nuisance.People should use it only when they have no other alternative. The problem is with user and not with the invention.
