Both. I cannot see any reason for England to play a holding midfielder (for goodness sake - a back four of Terry: Cole: Carragher and Ferdinand needs protecting????) therefore both Lampard and Gerrard must play in centre midfield. If they do not, then whichever plays there alone will get swamped and it will draw in Beckham and Joe Cole from the flanks which will deny England the width they need. The answer is to protect the FRONT of midfield by Rooney tracking back - but it's doubtful whether he's fit enopugh to do this yet. Watch tonight's matches - the problem of Lampard being swamped and the two wide men having to come inside will definitely occur as Hargreaves is starting and playing in a holding role...

Both players are pretty much world-class and would be an asset to any team. Fitness-wise they are unparallelled, covering a crazy amount of ground during games. They have vision, they can pass, and they can certainly shoot from anywhere they please. The only criticism levelled at them is that they haven't quite reproduced their club form for their country.

From recent performances, I would have to agree with Stevie G getting the nod ahead of Frank. In most England games he's been forced to play a holding midfield role rather than provide the creative spark which he does so successfully for Liverpool. He needs to be given more space to express himself properly - he drove forward on one rare occasion against T&T and scored a beauty. Lampard had several shots that game and failed to ignite.

The bottom line for me is that we should play an extra holding midfield player so Stevie and Frank can go ahead and rip teams apart with their passing and movement. We need both to be at their creative best and someone needs to cover for them while they're strutting their stuff.

Frank Lampard because he strikes are very dangerous, he knows how to begin or to continue his team attack, he plays much better than gerrard (sorry for that, my personal opinion) and he knows how to choose position.
