My speakers were ok before broadband. Thought I may have plugged them in the wrong way, but no, there is no other way. As they're not very old, could they have given up the ghost?

always check the simple things like power adapter not plugged in, power switch off, speakers plugged into wrong hole in audio card/motherboard etc etc. and then check to see if maybe your network card is causing an IRQ or address conflict with the sound card.
Look in the system section of control panel and see if your sound device is offline.
If it is, you may need to manually configure your network device.

Broadband should have no effect what so ever on your speakers unless the installation has somehow reset your audio set up. ~Go into the sound part of the control panel and make sure nothings been changed/muted

switching over to broadband should make the audio better. I would check to make sure the speakers are plugged in again and check to make sure the sound card volume isn't muted. you can do that through the control panel.

Check your Volume & Speaker controls in the Control Panel of your pc. Make sure that the "MUTE" box is unchecked. Click Apply, Click OK, then close your Control Panel.
You should be all set. If not check Advanced Options, Volume, Settings, do an Audio Test.
Then Click "Apply", Click "OK" Then close control Panel.

Every PC has a limited number of IO Ports (Input Output). When you install LAN Card for broad band purpose, you sound card IO and LAN card IO get in conflict, so only one hardware will work at a time. In your situation because LAN Card is working the sound card is not working. If you are working on Win-98 or Win-ME then only solution is to upgrade to Win-XP. If this does not solve your problem and you have ISA Sound Card then you will have to buy a PCI Slot Sound Card.

Good Luck!!!!
