The playoffs separate the opponents into two divisions ... the Eastern Division and the Western Division. To get to play for the Stanley Cup, teams must battle against their own division to win the "Western Cup" finals and the "Eastern Cup" finals. To obtain these is rewarding. Names of the winning teams are recorded.

Then the winners of the "Western Cup" face-off against the winners of the "Eastern Cup" to win the Stanley Cup. In short, to make it to play in the Stanley Cup finals is amazing. However, only the winning team will have it's name etched on the Stanley Cup.

No, that would make the thing too big and pointless. I mean come on why try to win if your name is on the cup either way. Sure the winners get to take it for a few days each but so. The REAL reward is that your name is forever engraved on the Cup and anyone who goes to the Hockey Hall of Fame will see your name.

'Fraid not. Considering that every player, coach, and member of the direct staff get their names on the cup at the end of the season, and taking into account that the cup has been a hockey tradition for 105 years, there wouldn't be any room for the second place team to have names engraved as well. The more important note, however, is truly that you must win the cup to be granted the honor of being immortalized on the gold cup.
