The answer to this depends upon your interests and skills. If you do not speak any Spanish and have no desire to do so, non-tourist locations are probably not a good choice. If, on the other hand, you love adventure, have great language skills, and want to see parts of Mexico that most tourists DON'T see, then you want to travel the backroads and visit the smaller towns outside the tourist areas.
There is no one right answer. It depends upon your skills, interests, ability to accept potentially dangerous situations, etc.

Nowhere else apart from Mexico City, Cancun, Baja California, Merida and Veracruz. In other places there are beautiful places, but sometimes, you won't be able to get Internet or other stuff, so...

Depends on what you like to do. My very favorite place in Mexico is Ixtapa. Second, Playa del Carmen.

Avoid any place that is close to the US Border.
You might like IXTAPA or some smaller towns a little further South.
