Nothing, whatever sells products. I think they feel the product has more credibility when it's sold with an English accent.

Hey, if it sells the product, then does it really matter? People who are advertising have obviously spent a lot of time and money researching what will work...they use experts to analyse information like this...if it works, then use it.....personally I would buy anything from a hunky american guy, with a pair of broad shoulders, good six-pack, wearing swimshorts and speaking with a deep south american accent....never looks the same when it is done by an English guy (could be something to do with white skin, receding hairline, 3 pack instead of six and a field instead of a beach in the background).... but then I am Scottish ...lol

Simple marketing thats all.
In the UK certain things like action toys, fast food etc will sell better with an American accent as it puts a lifestyle spin on the product.
Perfumes, wine and the like will sometimes get a French or Italian accent as it implies that its sexy.
Similarly in the U.S putting an English accent behind a product will sometimes imply quality and discernment.
The ad people spend a fortune researching their markets and usually for every one person who is irritated by the falseness of it, there are ten others who will be attracted.
It is a science.

If your product isn't worth buying with an American accent, what makes you think an English accent will do the trick ?
However, it does sound damn cool - even if I do say so myself -
And I suppose we (English) also do it occasionally with the American accent - but only in a "cheesy" way.
S'pose it doesn't hurt anyone, so its not really a problem.

It probably says a lot about the way that Americans feel the world percieves them.
If they need an English accent to portray trust, then the message might be seeping through.

In the USA, for example Boston, you can find people with very light English accent. Usually they use it to represent snob or snob-ism, just like some commercial that I have seen here to. Some also to make their products looks posh. Remember that like in war, in selling products all is allowed and more in our times!

It's ridiculous, especially because the British accent is so annoying. But Americans have an inferiority complex when it comes to our speech compared with the British accents.

As an English person it really doesn't bother me, people can speak however they want to, as far as I am concerned. It does seem quite odd that the English accent should 'sell better' though.

It depends on what type of British accent. If it's standard, received pronunciation, ie. 'posh', then I think that's rubbish. You Americans should listen to a bit of Geordie, Scouse, Manc, Brummie, and Glaswegian. Then you'd know what a British accent is. We're not all lah di dah you know.
