First off, there is no way I can say this without offending someone. If I use the term African American, some people will get angry. If I use the term black, some people will get angry. I have picked a way to describe the people I am talking about while trying not to offend anyone. Please read the question and answer accordingly. My opinion is that anyone who uses it is promoting racism. If white people use the infamous "N" word, black people understandably get angry. Black people use it, but I think this is wrong too. The word is tied to slavery, racism, and persecution. When a black person uses it, and gets angry when other people use it, I believe they are unknowingly (or maybe knowingly) reaffirming that they are to be treated differently from other races which only reaffirms racism and prejudices that anger the same people who use the word. What do you think? Am I off the mark here?

I think the answer goes back to the "Uncle Tom" days. Black people (on a whole) in America have been asking for the same rights and to be treated the same for quite some time; however they have committed themselves to be maintaining their "roots." This has caused a major problem with black youth in the US because more times then not a successful black person is called an Oreo or Uncle Tom due to them "acting" like they are white (excluding the entertainment industry i.e sports, acting, music..). The "N" word is one way that they maintain that heritage and I think was used long ago to remind them of where they come from. Is it right that they use it and be offended when a person of a different race uses it? Not really yes or no, however the most raciest people in America are black people on a whole, and they continually make sure that "whites" are reminded of their problems and accuse "whites" because they are black and oppressed. They use the color of their skin as crutch more today than say 30 years ago. I have been to many places around the world and have seen true discrimination of blacks and I have to say that African Americans have it made in comparison. I do want to say however that there is racism against blacks in America and it is a problem, however blacks are making it more of a problem due to their own separation from any thing "white."

Well black people use the n word to usually describe their own race like as a friend. And they use the n word with an a not an er, and no one else should use the n word with an a except black people. And it's not wrong so it isn't tied with slavery, racism, ect. Only blacks from the ghetto use the word and other black people probably don't know the word. The n word with an a could be used as a insult, a way to get a black's attention, or used for a friend. So now you know your on the mark.

the fact that black people use the term means that it's now no longer an expression of racism - it is now just another insult, a way for one person to put another down. don't read too much into it, and let's not worry so much about offending people by using the wrong term to describe them - it's the intention that counts, not the word itself.

Even Oprah Winfry said "Y'all need to find a new word!" I was raised that this was a swear word ever worse than the "f" word. I think black people have turned against each other and want to keep each other down like in Chamillionaire's song, "Ridin". Similarly, women also do this to each other by calling each other "b****". We are staring to not only segregate ourselves, but our language. We all need to sit down and watch The Color Purple again!

A-A do not call each other N**gers. The slang that they use is N**gas which means "friend". Only A-A can use this because they created the term for themselves! The sadness of this question shows racism and ignorance on ur part!

I don't know. I know plenty of black people that hate other black people using that word. It really doesn't make any sense.. but whatever floats your boat I guess.

i dont liek when they use it to each other and get mad when an asian says it or something. i think if it is used, anyone should be able to say it, but uonly the ones who use it respectfully./ there is a differencve btwn. N-i-g-g-a (more polite) and n-i-g-g-e-r- which is racist. i think people should quit saying it, because it so controversial.
