An undergraduate is a student studying for a degree who has yet to graduate (ie pass all his exams and be awarded a degree). A degree is an educational award given to those who have studied for at least 3 years in higher education (after A-levels) on a recognised and validated degree course, usually studied for at a university.

The first 2 years of college education is undergraduate.

The next 2 years you complete the speciality subjects, and after passing out you are given a certification, and that called a degree.

Its common to distinguish education levels by shorter name of under graduate/degree.

In some educational systems, undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a Bachelor's degree. Students of higher degrees are known as postgraduates (or often simply graduates).

A degree is any of a wide range of status levels conferred by institutions of higher education, such as universities, normally as the result of successfully completing a program of study.

You are doing an undergraduate degree when you start uni. You are an undergraduate. When you graduate you have "degree". If you then decide to keep studying, you do a postgraduate course (masters, PhD, PGCE etc), becoming a postgraduate student.

When you are studying on a degree programme such as a bachelors degree, you are an undergraduate.

When you graduate, you are the holder of a degree and can put letters after your name such as BA.

When you go on to do a second degree, you are in postgraduate studies.
