I understand that if I were investing, it would be easier to just buy an exchange traded gold fund, but I'm looking for actual bars. Where can they be bought? Are online dealers my only option?

If you had enough money to buy gold bars you wouldnt be spending your time sitting on your *ss on a computer in Yahoo Questions asking dumb*ss questions like this.

The rich are in contact with the rich and things like this are common knowledge.

If you are planning on buying a gold bar Im sorry but they dont shave the gold bar down to crumbs for the amount of money you have.

Keep dreaming pal!!!

Wow, there's a lot of really dumb answers here. Meflaps, I'm looking mostly at you. Gold comes in very different sized bars, from 1000oz all the way down to 1/20oz. Anyone with thirty bucks can buy a teeny tiny gold bar. If you're only buying one or just a few bars, I second the notion to buy on ebay. Just use common sense and buy from people with 1000+ feedback.

I don't think buying online is safe. Am not sure with the legality in your country. There are some countries where a person can legally buy gold bars with certificate. Other choices are to buy gold coins as investment. Just check the commodity prices first to be safe.

Try your local jewelery store. Or look in the phone book under goldsmith. The major problem you are going to come into contact with is the markup. You are going to have a problem getting the bars at a price that will justify your investment.
