Hi there,
The best advice would be to download a free trial of a product called Prevx1. This currently offers the strongest protection and removal capabilities of any security product available, and also won't cost you a thing!
Prevx is an all-in-one solutions that will protect you from ALL forms of malware (virii, adware, spyware, trojans, rootkits, etc). You can read more about Prevx1 and/or download their Free Trial here:
http://www.prevx.com
Also - Please Avoid AVG at all costs This really is an awful program, now offering one of the lowest protection scores of all security programs, with newer viruses waltzing straight through their defences. It's free for a reason, and that's because it's protection is lacking. I recently installed Prevx1 on a friends computer who already had AVG - and Prevx1 went on to remove over 30 viruses AVG had completely missed. Quite shocking really and I wish people would stop recommending it...
Good Luck

Some weeks ago I had a problem with my computer, it was slowing down and i couldn't explain why some websites where redirecting! Since I had a good (norton) antivirus system I did not think that I had spyware! , however a friend of mine came to my house and immediately told me that I had a spyware program, he entered into a site downloaded one of the free programs featured there and installed it on my computer, after running this program my computer is fast and downloading normally, whilst my homepage was also restored.
the webpage where you can find free reliable anti spyware is:

I 2nd that! AVG Free is an excellent Anti Virus Software.
Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware will help pick up any other nasties but if your using AVG Free you shouldn't have any problems. Also get a firewall from Zone Alarm

I couldn't get that crap of my system using normal virus scanner (MacAfee at that time) but I did find a widget which at the time was called HijackThis! which did a successfull one time scrub of all the hijackers and so on. It was free. Maybe cnet.com?

I would recommend having adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) or
Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) or
MS Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx)
and for a virus scanner Avast (http://www.avast.com/). They are all free.
