A leap year (or intercalary year) is a year containing an extra day, week or month in order to keep the calendar year in sync with an astronomical or seasonal year. For example, February would have 29 days instead of just 28. Seasons and astronomical events do not repeat at an exact number of days, so a calendar which had the same number of days in each year would over time drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year which is not a leap year is called a common year.

Leap years (which keep the calendar in sync with the year) should not be confused with leap seconds (which keep clock time in sync with the day).

A leap year is a year with one extra day inserted into February, the leap year is 366 days with 29 days in February as opposed to the normal 28 days.

btw, Year 2008 is the next leap year, with 29 days in February. February 2008 has five Fridays - it starts and ends on a Friday. Between 1904 and 2096, leap years with same day of week for each date repeat every 28 years which means that the last time February had 5 Fridays was in 1980 and next time will be in 2036.

hope this is useful? hehe

Leap Year is containing 366 days and it's February has 29 days. If we devided a year by 4 and the result is = a whole number that is leap year. Here 2004/4=501, it is a leap year.

Well, every year actually has 365.25 days but it would be hard to have a quarter of a day so instead every four years is a full day and that uses up the .25, the quarter of a day!! Basically, humans couldn't be bothered with a quarter day so they saved them up for four years and added an extra day on the fourth year.

I feel sorry for people born on a leapyear day, they only have a proper birthday every four years!!
