Carl Sandburg. I loved his poetry the moment I was required to do a report on him, and now I read it for fun. It's so insightful and creative. Good luck on your report!

I suggest the new poet laureate of the United States, Donald Hall.
His life and his work are both worth learning about.
(By the way, Wordsworth, Tennyson, Plath, Hughes and Auden are all dead. Wordsworth and Tennyson have been dead a LOOOOOONGGG time, and couldn't be considered contemporary poets. Plath and Auden have been dead for over 30 years as well. You MIGHT get by with Hughes, as he's been dead less than 10 years, but I wouldn't call him contemporary now either.)

Jacob is the first person in Scripture who had only descendants who formed a single nation. Abraham had 8 sons of which 7 became nations in Arabia, while Isaac his second son remained in Canaan. Isaac had two sons, one became the nation of Edom (present day Jordan) and the other, Jacob became the nation of Israel. At the time of Moses the people were known as Hebrews or Israelites. After King Solomon's death the kingdom was divided with 10 tribes becoming the northern kingdom which retained the name Israel. The southern kingdom was called Judah. It is this southern group of Israelites that became known as Jews.

Sharon Olds is truly contemporary -- she's still alive and she writes about contemporary problems. She also writes about her childhood and relationships in her family.

You can go to www.poets.org to see some of her work.
