literature = fiction (probably)

History is about facts. Facts about the past. Literature is about fiction and about opinion and art, and about the high quality of writing.

Having said that, there are many overlaps. History can be written in such a way that it becomes literature. That is, literature in the sense of being a pleasure to read it, even if you are not a history buff. Also, many fiction writers place their stories in a historical context and provide a lot of insight into the era in which the story is placed. That depends, of course, on how well researched they are. Some of the best literature tells us more about the period in which it is set than the history books of the same period are able to convey.

Let's agree that at best, history and literature should be good friends.

History is when you talk about the historical FACTS that happened (some of which are true, some we think are already filtered).

Literature, on the other hand, are stories or nonfictional compilation of works BASED on historical happenings or by pure imagination (or work of art).
