I listened to a very cringeworthy broadcast of radio fives football phone in 6-0-6 last night, which is normally a good show. However Tony Blair was guest and just spouting out a lot of footballing cliches (which I am sure are not his own opinons more likely his spin doctors had grabbed from the papers). Do you think he should do these shows? or is it blatant pandering to appear to be in touch with the common man (who he is selling down the river)?

Why not? He got nothing else to do. Blank Bush tells him what to do all the time.
Enjoy it Tony, soon you would not be able to sleep ( that is if you got a conscience ).

That's Politics.

Not only do leaders have to run the country - they also have to keep one eye on the next election by making sure that they 'press the flesh'.

This is just another example of pressing the flesh.

I get the feeling that whatever happens, you have already decided which way you are going to vote, so I guess whatever he does or spins politically - you will try to counter spin.

However, there are the undecided and floating voters who this kind of stunt is aimed at. Some may have been impressed.

Modern Politics is more about image and presentation rather than policy because the advisers realise that they need to pitch their product at the level of their audience.

Rhetoric and polished presentation is working for them, so why do they need to change?

I'd suggest from your question not having anything to do with actual policy and everything to with rhetoric and image - they are probably right.

I think its fine for Tony Blair to be on football shows, he should in fact stick to that instead of running the country, if someone else was in his place the world would be a safer place right now.
He is probably saying what he is told to say after all doesnt he do everything george bush tells him to (you should see that video of him and bush (george michael) a perfect example of who he is.

Having a team competing in the World Cup can unite an entire country. At least if that country has nothing else going for it besides soccer. So definitely he should be on the radio talking about it.

Can you imagine anyone single handedly run a country? A person cannot run his or her own life without support and advices of others. When we talk about a country we talk about economy, health, education, roads, tax, war, millions of people, you name it. Tony Blair or ,any other "head of something" is just a representative, a display, brand or symbol of a great and complex project. He has to sleep, pee, eat while the rest of the country and its numerous issues continue.

I think it is nice that Tony shows he is human. That he likes football and has an opinion.

The country has never been in better hands than his and he can hold his head up and be proud that HE has run the country well...

The same cant be said for the rest of his cabinet, however.... ;o)

It doesnt matter who runs the country they will all mess it up. we should go back to when the king/queen ran the country and tehy lead the army intobattle. and didnot hide behind a nic thick concrete wall. Blair is a chicken give him a gun and send him to iraq. he would definatkley pooh his own pants and cry for mummy.

He may know sweet FA about football, but it's more than what he knows about running a country! Stick to radio Tony, thanks to you Alan Shearer just became a football pundit genius.
