Say you do something nice for somebody, you will have potentially gained some 'brownie points', meaning that at some time in the future, near or far, that person will either repay the favour or look upon you more favourably or even perhaps forgive you for an indescretion. They arn't actual points that you write in a book or anything, they're hypothetical. Try earning some today, they are often worth much more than money!

When you do something nice for someone it is jokingly referred to as accumulating Brownie points (as in the Brownies, the Girl Scout organization for young girls) as they do good deeds as part of their mission and used to accumulate "points" for each good deed.
Other posters are wrong about this being related to brown nosing. Brown nosing is an undesirable trait whereas getting Brownie points is generally thought of as a good thing.
