Who were the flagellants.. How did they try to stem the tide of the plague?

The Black Death had affected Europe and earthquakes, Italy. People thought that the workd was ending. The flagellants tried to stem the tide of destruction by performing corporeal mortification all over Europe so as to cleanse all of the sins of man and thus save the world from destruction. That was their belief.
