Magnets are used to generate energy via wind turbines in much the same way that the previously mentioned car alternators work. Fixed magnets are mounted around an opening and brushes pick up electrons from the magnet as they are turned by the wind.
Here is a link to a educational-experimental web site about wind energy.

Magnets do not of themselves generate or create energy.
Doing work against the force of a magnet is a way of turning mechanical energy into electrical energy, and is the basis of all electrical power systems. So far from being an alternative technology for energy, they are the very basis of teh current technology. As far as being a replacement for say fossil fuel, they can never make any conrtribution.

We already use magnetic energy. It's called an alternator and is in every car. An alternator is a magnetic part of the car that charges the battery and keeps the car running. It is powerful enough that, if in proper condition, can run the car without the battery once the car has been started.

i think eventually they will but probably not for the next 50 yrs or more ... currently Japan and Europe have trains that float on magnetic rails and can hit sppeds of 200 mph ....also if i remember correctly --- anything can be "magnetized" if you have a strong enough magnet
