Use lots of stakes and ropes. You will need to get very sturdy stakes and drive them into the ground then tie off on the tree to make sure it does not fall toward your house. Also start cutting house side and when you cut far enough into the tree start driving wedges into it, that will get the tree started away.
The biggest thing is the tieing of the tree and use good ropes to do it.
The other way is to whittle it away. Start at the top and cut it a little at a time with a chain saw. Cutting smaller pieces will take a while but it can be done rather safely.

Dude--listen to me on this--hire it done--it will be FAR cheaper than the mistake you're about to make here---when a large tree is very near the house you are in extreme possibility of absolute disaster--the simplest miscalculation can cost you thousands of dollars and it only takes a second to be over with---without tree felling experience you are going to soon need carpenters and electricians and lord only knows what else..I have taken down dozens of trees---all sizes for property companies around my area--and even with the experience I have each new situation poises brand new risks and challenges---hire it done

Some things in life are not meant to be handled by us amateurs. The cost of hiring a professional will be cheaper than paying for a gaping hole in your roof, or worse...your neighbor's roof...if you make a mistake, and chances are you will. The end result of trying to save money by doing it yourelf is much the same as discovering you have a tumor and deciding to remove it yourself because doctors are expensive. Think of the cost of tree removal as 'malpactrice insurance'.

Umm find a friend thats a logger or treefaller... they are cheaper than people suing you over negligence. $175 for falling a diffuclt tree or a $200,000 lawsuit.. Or you can rent a chainsaw and a truck if you don't have one and hook a chain to it and cut it at the base in a v- and use wedges in the back of the tree to fall it in the direction you want. And pull like loggers do in the area that you want it to fall.. But please don't do it unless you have already.. or find a former logger. or a tree faller to do it for you. Most electrical companies will do it for free if its near a powerline.

Start trimming the branches first from the top most, and use an electric saw to cut the the tree from the top most little by little at a time lowering the cuts by thick rope. this is to prevent the tree cuts from falling onto your house.

I'd get a ladder and start cutting it in smaller pieces, thats what I did with my big tree next to my house.

ya have a friend with a bulldozer? dont be so cheap, contatct a local aborist, he,s insured to take down trees, and if theres an accident and he drops it on your house your house is covered, if you do it and drop it on your house, do you have proper insurance to cover a mishap? dont take chances, take action.

Cut it in small peaces, and make sure to dig the roots out adding support to your foundation if necessary.Make sure to refill the whole completely.
