Hey, I've done it too! I think it's because we've just spent an hour chatting with them, and also, I think of a hairstylist as a sort of artist, and I don't want to insult their work. It's weird though, cause usually I have no problem being a ***** when necessary.

I do it because I feel that if I express dissatisfaction with the haircut, it's a criticism of the hairdresser's skills. What I do instead is thank them, then next time I have an appointment, tell him/her that I wasn't thrilled about the last cut, then give specific reasons why. "Too short in back. Too many layers. Too 'flippy' here." Whatever the issues are. Then I explain specifically what I'm looking for. Taking a picture in of the exact (or close to it) haircut you'd like is a good way to ensure your happiness.

Don't you suppose it's because in our culture, we have been raised to be polite and accept whatever crap is thrown our way??? Particulalry women. We are just supposed to take it and shut up, even if we have paid for it. Now me, I am a mouthy 60 year old and will argue with anyone if my service is wrong...even fast food restaurants, and sometimes even get free goods or services because of it. But you are absolutely right - not the hairdresser. I guess it's just the last bastion of being genteel??? Do men do that too, if the barber screws up?? I wonder.

I also had the same problem.
It is not rude to inform the hair dresser politely to make the needed corrections. Or to stress for maybe 3-4 times, what you want if you don't see that they are following what you say.
It is after all your hair, your money, and your looks that are at stake.
Remember it is up to you to be a doormat or a diplomat

I haven't quite figured that one out myself.
I guess we should just say we hate the hair style instead of going home with a giant bouffant hairdo---looking like something kicked out of the 60's.
