Higher altitude has less dense air than lower altitude. Air particles have weight. Gravity affects them. When something is less dense, the less molecules is has to be "excited" by heat energy. The fewer particles a given volume of air has, the less it has the ability to retain heat energy. So, its "cooler". Just keep in mind the true definition of cold is "the absence of heat".
