There is a new birth control pill that makes your period shorter. I've seen the commerials for it on TV, but I can't remember the name. Ask your doc if you are interested. Also, I was on Seasonale birth control, which lets you have only 4 periods a year.
Actually, you should probably see your doctor anyway. Sometimes heavy periods are a symptom of ovarian cysts.
A lot of women have this problem. I'm sure there are some effective treatments for it.
Good luck!

If you mean cramps, drink lots of milk and if they are too bad to where you can't hardly stand or you throw up, you should see a doctor. More than likely they will end up putting you on the pill. Most of the time heavy menstrual cycles are hereditary.

If you have always had this problem, you most likely have a condition called "Von Willebrand's disease" which is a problem with blood clotting. Many women have it & it isn't serious. Birth control usually remedies this problem.
If this is a new problem, it could be pelvic inflammatory disease or something similar. See your ob/gyn.
