'IM' Generally stands for 'Instant Message' through an IM client. These act like an instant email between two individuals, and can set up chatrooms for groups. most networks also support a webcam/talk feature. members are identified by their Screen names(s/n) There are different networks/free providers that people go through
The major types of client networks out there are:
ICQ/AIM network
MSN network
Yahoo Network
G-talk/Jabber Network
There are other networks.. but i'm not sure what they are called, but basically you'd have to find out what your friends are using.
A good provider is called Trillian basic

Trillian basic works for most basic networks, if that doesn't work you can go with the seperate providers (Yahoo Instant messager, MSN messager, ICQ ect.) or another good IM client called Gaim

Which i personally use.
All Instant messager networks are free that i know of.
