Sorry folks but several of you are wrong. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than other light, hence it is more energetic. All other wavelengths get absorbed as one descends into the depths of the ocean. Finally the only light illuminating ones surroundings is blue!

The last color is blue because that is as much color as our eyes were designed to see. Light as we know it does not penetrate that far into the water, relatively speaking. Other colors may be measured by more sensitive instruments. The depths of the ocean are dark except for the light provided by bio-luminescent sea creatures.

When light is split into it's component colours, each different colour has a different speed - red is the fastest (shortest wavelength), blue is the slowest (longest wavelength).
Therefore only the blue light has a long enough wavelength to penetrate lower.
And the deeper you go, the longer the wavelength of light required to get that low, the slower the light has to be, which makes it darker.

Technically, the last color you see is black. Go deep enough and light can't penetrate. That's why deep sea creatures are luminescent.
