The greatest thing that ever happened in America would have to be the election of Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency. His election sparked the American Civil War, which resolved the issue of slavery that had been festering since the Constitution was being formed. His leadership and conviction guided the country through the difficult years of the war and would have shortened up the Reconstruction period considerably had he been alive to do so.

WWII and the Great Depression.

If the Great Depression would not have happened, FDR would not have developed manufacturing plants to simply put people to work. If WWII wouldn't have happened, FDR's spending would have collapsed our economy even more. It was perfect timing, we had all these facilites and nothing to make until the war which is why we stayed out of it for so long. American becomes superpower as a result.
