Steinbeck. Tone, style, dramatic effect, dark humor. He harshly critiques the American dream while still offering a rather optomistic view of what life can be. I wish he was more appreciated in American Lit.

All those guys are pretty damned depressing, Hemingway is the worst.... I would say Steinbeck too, at least some of his stuff didn't make me want to kill myself, I really enjoyed "Of mice and men" and "The Pearl" but "Grapes of Wrath" was just sad. Faulkner really turned me off, and the only thing I ever read by Fitzgerald was "The Great Gatsby" which I thought sucked out loud.

I havent read Faulkner, but others, would rate them as : Steinbeck (Of mice and men), Hemingway and then Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby). But is it fair to compete them? Each has his distinct style, which is effective for his book.

Steinbeck, "Grapes of Wrath" the last paragraph really defined the human condition at that time. Faulkner... anything by him; I love the way Faulkner brings U.S. Southern culture to life with his long explicatives. I can't get into Hemingway--his sentences are short and abrupt, and there's nothing luscious about his written expression.

Fitzgerald - so beautiful, but I also like Faukner and Steinbeck. Hemingway is a bit sterile for me, but really interesting.

Faulkner, he's the only one who wrote a tour de force, thus having an original creation in literature. It is As I Lay Dying, the first ever with multiple narrators. But I like Sanctuary the most.

Hemingway wrote about the complexity in humans and developed great human characters. Though the best of all these is Victor Hugo, second would be Alex. Dumas.
P.S. My poem doesn't suck. -sniffle-

I love F.Scott Fitzgerald, he became the epitome of American pop culture in th 1920's, and understood it all. In my opinion, "The Great Gatsby" and "The Ice Palace" are tied for best story.
